PRESENTING A VERY RARE EARLY EDITION hardback copy of The American History Series…The Colonial ERa by George Park Fisher, D.D., LL.D., Professor in Yale University WITH MAPS Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York in 1895.

The First Edition was released in 1892.

This EXTREMELY RARE book is in very good condition. Some discoloration to the blue cloth cover , some ‘nibbling’ on the corners of the 1st couple of pages, but otherwise very good for it’s age.

It has ALL the attached Maps.

This book was part of the extensive private collection of the Calvert Hall/Obenchain/Godwin/McMillan Collection formerly of Bowling Green, KY and later, Highland Park, Texas.

AS you can see from the history of this Collection, the family have very strong ancestral ties to the States of Virginia, Kentucky and Texas.

Major Obenchain was an important figure both in the American Civil War and subsequently in the World of Academia.

George Park Fisher (August 10, 1827 – December 20, 1909) was an American theologian and historian who was noted as a teacher and a prolific writer.

He was born in Wrentham, Massachusetts. He graduated from Brown University in 1847, and then studied theology at Yale Divinity School and the Andover Theological Seminary. He graduated from the latter institution in 1851. In 1853 he visited Germany, where he continued his theological studies.

Upon returning from Europe in 1854, he was appointed professor of divinity at Yale, and he was ordained as pastor of the College church. In 1861, he resigned these positions to become a professor of ecclesiastical history. In 1901, he became emeritus professor. Fisher was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1879. He was president of the American Historical Association in 1898.

William Alexander Obenchain. Born April 27, 1841 at Buchanan, Botetourt Co., Virginia.

Parents: Thomas Jefferson Obenchain and Elizabeth Ann Sweetland.

Entered VMI on July 18, 1859 as a member of the VMI (Virginia Military Institute) Class of 1862 and was graduated (1st in his class) in December 1861–this class was graduated early due to the Civil War.

Served in various capacities as an Engineer officer throughout the Civil War. At rank of Captain he was a senior ranking officer in the Virginia Corps of Engineers and served on Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Staff.

He was promoted to the rank of Major, for meritorious conduct near Richmond in 1864.

Post-War Career- Educator.

Taught at Hillsborough Military Academy (NC), Pittsboro (NC) Military Academy, Western Military Acad. (New Castle, KY), University of Nashville, Ogden College, Bowling Green, KY.

Married Eliza Calvert Hall (famous Author) of Bowling Green in 1885.

Obenchain died August 17, 1916 at his home in Bowling Green, age 75.
