PRESENTING A STUNNING & RARE Pair of 19C Oils on Canvas of Highland Cattle by John W Morris.
Circa 1890-1900 and painted by John W. Morris, a renowned British Artist, known for his Scottish Highland scenes and in particular his depiction of Highland Cattle.
To have a pair is fantastic!
These paintings have ‘always’ been together.
Each is signed on bottom left “John Morris” on one and “J. Morris” on the other, both authentic signature(s).
John W. Morris (1865-1924) was a British artist of some renown. He was known for his landscapes and paintings of animals in general. He painting dogs, sheep and in particular Highland Cattle. His paintings achieve very good prices, as the detail and quality of his depictions of animals is considered outstanding.
This pair, both feature a number of Highland Cattle in Highland pastoral settings.
The top one, with 2 cattle standing and 2 lying down amidst grass, rocks, gorse and heather. Misty mountains, more cattle and a ‘Loch’ in the background.
The bottom one, with 4 standing cattle amidst grass, rocks, gorse and heather. Misty mountains, more cattle and a ‘Loch’ in the background.
Both were probably re-framed here in the US in the 1980’s, in ‘rustic’ or ‘provincial’ style frames, which really show off the quality of the artwork itself.
For display in our Gallery we have them mounted on a late 19C American Eastlake Victorian Walnut Easel (being sold separately).
We really ‘LOVE’ these paintings. The quality of the artist really ‘pops’ off the canvas!
Provenance: Acquired by us from the Estate of a well known and wealthy Dallas Collector who collected fine art and furniture during the last quarter of the 20th Century from all over the World. He was specifically attracted to authentic Highland Cattle paintings and we also acquired a fabulous large painting by Henry Robinson Hall which is separately listed.
