Ryder Cup Official Programme Ireland 2006.
For the Golfer !!!!
Official Ryder Cup Programme from the K Club in 2006.
Remembered as one of the most memorable Ryder Cups ever…..if not least because of the emotion surrounding the European & Irish player ………. Darren Clarke……who lost his wife to cancer just before the competition.
There was not a dry eye in the house when he won …… I have NEVER witnessed such raw emotion at a sporting event, as Darren’s first tee shot on Friday morning in the rain !!!
I have never witnessed such sportmanship and sporting camaraderie, as when Tiger Woods (then the undisputed World’s best golfer) delayed moving from the 15th Green to wait to congratulate Darren when he won his singles match on that hole in the grouping behind him……and Darren burying his head in convulsions of grief in Tiger’s shoulder !!
WHAT A MEMORY….ONE FOR THE AGES !! BRAVO TIGER….BRAVO DARREN !!!
The almost constant rain at the event is the reason there is some slight water damage to the programme…..but this provenance and my story just add to it !!
You could buy one in perfect condition…..but with this one you can always say with certainty that the ‘Irish Rain’ fell on it at the K-Club !!
RYDER CUP 2006: The 36th Ryder Cup Matches were held 22–24 September 2006 in Ireland at the Palmer Course of the K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, west of Dublin. It was the first time the event was played in Ireland.
Europe won by 18½ to 9½ points, equaling their record winning margin of two years earlier for their third consecutive win, a first for Europe. Swedish rookie Henrik Stenson made the winning putt, just moments after Luke Donald sank a putt to ensure Europe retained the trophy.
In 2006, Clarke only managed to record four top-10 placings and finished the year 43rd on the Order of Merit. However, just six weeks after the death of his wife, Heather, he made a big contribution to Europe’s Ryder Cup win in 2006 at The K Club in the Ireland. Clarke was one of Ian Woosnam’s two wild card picks and he earned three points on the way to victory for Europe, including a 3 & 2 win in his singles match against Zach Johnson.
In 2011, Clarke won his first European Tour title since August 2008 with a three-stroke victory over Chris Wood and David Lynn in the Iberdrola Open. After finishing tied for third in the 2001 Open Championship, Clarke did not make the top-10 of any major, until he won his first major championship at the 2011 Open at the age of 42 – his 20th attempt at winning the Claret Jug.
Clarke was named as the 2016 Ryder Cup captain on 18 February 2015. He was selected by a five-man selection panel consisting of the last three Ryder Cup captains: Paul McGinley, José María Olazábal, Colin Montgomerie, another ex-Ryder Cup player David Howell and the European Tour chief executive George O’Grady.
