Cassandre, pseudonym of¬†Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron[1]¬†(24 January 1901 ‚Äď 17 June 1968) was a¬†French¬†painter, commercial¬†poster¬†artist, and¬†typeface¬†designer.

He was born Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron in KharkivUkraine,[4][5] to French parents. As a young man, Cassandre moved to Paris, where he studied at the √Čcole des Beaux-Arts and at the Acad√©mie Julian. The popularity of posters as advertising afforded him an opportunity to work for a Parisian printing house. Inspired by cubism as well as surrealism, he earned a reputation with works such as B√Ľcheron (Woodcutter), a poster created for a cabinetmaker that won first prize at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts D√©coratifs et Industriels Modernes.

Cassandre became successful enough that with the help of partners he was able to set up his own advertising agency called Alliance Graphique, serving a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters advertising travel, for clients such as the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits.[6] He was a pioneer on airbrush arts.

His creations for the Dubonnet wine company were among the first posters designed in a manner that allowed them to be seen by occupants in moving vehicles. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions and their frequent denotations to such painters as Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso. In addition, he taught graphic design at the √Čcole des Arts D√©coratifs and then at the √Čcole d’Art Graphique.

With typography an important part of poster design, the company created several new typeface styles. Cassandre developed¬†Bifur¬†in 1929, the¬†sans serif¬†Acier Noir in 1935, and in 1937 an all-purpose font called¬†Peignot. In 1936, his works were exhibited at the¬†Museum of Modern Art¬†in¬†New York City¬†which led to commissions from¬†Harper’s Bazaar¬†to do cover designs.

With the onset of World War II, Cassandre served in the French army until the fall of France. His business long gone, he survived by creating stage sets and costumes for the theatre, something he had dabbled in during the 1930s.[7] After the war, he continued this line of work while also returning to easel painting. He worked with several famous French fashion houses, designing playing cards and scarfs for Herm√®s [8] and the well-known Yves Saint Laurent logo.

In his later years, Cassandre suffered from bouts of depression prior to his suicide in Paris in 1968.[4]

In 1985, Cassandre’s son told his father’s life story in a book titled¬†A.M. Cassandre. The book, published in English by Rizzoli, is currently out of print.


Fortune was founded by The Atlantic Monthly Company co-founder Henry Luce in 1929 as ‚Äúthe Ideal Super-Class Magazine‚ÄĚ, a ‚Äúdistinguished and de luxe‚ÄĚ publication ‚Äúvividly portraying, interpreting and recording the Industrial Civilization‚ÄĚ.[4] Briton Hadden, Luce‚Äôs business partner, was not enthusiastic about the idea ‚Äď which Luce originally thought to title Power ‚Äď but Luce went forward with it after Hadden‚Äôs sudden death on February 27, 1929.[5]

In late October 1929, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 occurred, marking the onset of the Great Depression. In a memo to the Time Inc. board in November 1929, Luce wrote: ‚ÄúWe will not be over-optimistic. We will recognize that this business slump may last as long as an entire year.‚ÄĚ[6] The publication made its official debut in February 1930. Its editor was Luce, managing editor Parker Lloyd-Smith, and art director Thomas Maitland Cleland.[7] Single copies of the first issue cost US$1 ($15.3 in 2019).[6] An urban legend says that Cleland mocked up the cover of the first issue with the $1 price because no one had yet decided how much to charge; the magazine was printed before anyone realized it, and when people saw it for sale, they thought that the magazine must really have worthwhile content. In fact, there were 30,000 subscribers who had already signed up to receive that initial 184-page issue. By 1937, the number of subscribers had grown to 460,000, and the magazine had turned half million dollars in annual profit.[8]

At a time when business publications were little more than numbers and statistics printed in black and white, Fortune was an oversized 11‚Ä≥√ó14‚Ä≥, using creamy heavy paper, and art on a cover printed by a special process.[9] Fortune was also noted for its photography, featuring the work of Margaret Bourke-WhiteAnsel Adams, and others. Walker Evans served as its photography editor from 1945 to 1965.

During the Great Depression, the magazine developed a reputation for its social conscience, for Walker Evans and Margaret Bourke-White‚Äės color photographs, and for a team of writers including James AgeeArchibald MacLeishJohn Kenneth Galbraith, and Alfred Kazin, hired specifically for their writing abilities. The magazine became an important leg of Luce‚Äôs media empire;[citation needed] after the successful launch of Time in 1923 and Fortune in 1930, Luce went on to launch Life in 1936 and Sports Illustrated in 1954.

From its launch in 1930 to 1978, Fortune was published monthly. In January 1978, it began publishing biweekly. In October 2009, citing declining advertising revenue and circulationFortune began publishing every three weeks.[10][11] As of 2018, Fortune is published 14 times a year.


Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I.[1] Art Deco influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewelry, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and vacuum cleaners.[2] It took its name, short for Arts D√©coratifs, from the Exposition internationale des arts d√©coratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) held in Paris in 1925.[3] It combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.

Art Deco was a pastiche of many different styles, sometimes contradictory, united by a desire to be modern. From its outset, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the bright colors of Fauvism and of the Ballets Russes; the updated craftsmanship of the furniture of the eras of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI; and the exotic styles of China and JapanIndiaPersiaancient Egypt and Maya art. It featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship. The Chrysler Building and other skyscrapers of New York built during the 1920s and 1930s are monuments of the Art Deco style.

In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, Art Deco became more subdued. New materials arrived, including chrome platingstainless steel, and plastic. A sleeker form of the style, called Streamline Moderne, appeared in the 1930s; it featured curving forms and smooth, polished surfaces.[4] Art Deco is one of the first truly international styles, but its dominance ended with the beginning of World War II and the rise of the strictly functional and unadorned styles of modern architecture and the International Style of architecture that followed.
