FANTASTIC AND EXTREMELY RARE Hand Colored Aquatint Preparation for a Suttee or the Immolation of a Hindu Widow by Captain Grindlay.

Titled: ‘Preparation of a Suttee or the Immolation of a Hindu Widow’…….from a drawing by Captain Robert Melville Grindlay (1786 – 1877).

It depicts the scene of preparing a Widow  for the act of 'Suttee' or immolation....... in the River Ganges......with Hindu Temple in background and gathered mourners.

The engraving was published by Smith Elder & Co, Cornhill, London.

It was engraved by R.G. Reeve and etched by J. Willis and H. Melville.

Whilst the topic is quite 'morbid' this is a very important historical representation and record of this ancient Hindu custom.....thus making it a SIGNIFICANT AND IMPORTANT piece of art.

Christie's in London have sold these prints and engravings (and others by Captain Grindlay) for thousands of pounds in the past......In fact, we are pretty sure that this print was one out of a Book of Prints sold by Christies Auction House for over $22,000 in 2007 and then, separated and framed.

CAPTAIN ROBERT MELVILLE GRINDLAY (1786-1877)

Scenery, Costumes and Architecture chiefly on the Western Side of India. London: Smith, Elder & Co., [1826]-1830. 6 parts in 1 vol., 2° (400 x 305mm). Coloured engraved title, and 36 coloured aquatints on thick paper, with plate 36 bound as frontispiece, by Reeve, Fielding, Hunt, Bentley, Pyall, Hughes, and Edge, after Grindlay, Westall, Stanfeld, Roberts, Purser, Witherington, Fielding and Daniell, and coloured by J.B. Hogarth. (All leaves loose, dampstain in bottom margin affecting most leaves, small wormhole in bottom margin, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary green half-morocco by J. Wright, spine richly gilt in compartments, gilt edges (hinges split and stitching perished, joints starting at head, paper sides worn, some scuffing, extremities rubbed).

'NEXT TO DANIELL, THE MOST ATTRACTIVE COLOUR PLATE BOOK ON INDIA' (Tooley). Grindlay, a self-taught amateur artist, went to India in 1803, aged 17. He served with the East India Company's military service from 1804-20 and during this period made a large number of sketches and drawings recording the life and landscape of India. This copy is the third issue of the work (the first being bound from parts, the second bound as two volumes without part titles, and finally this, the third, bound with one title), in a binding by John Wright (d.1854)-- 'a binder of the highest order' (Ramsden, London Book Binders, p.154).
