Early 20C George Washington Portrait Bicentennial Litho

PRESENTING A HIGHLY DESIRABLE piece of America History and American Art.

This is a large colored lithograph of George Washington, made in 1931 for the Bicentennial Commemoration of Washington’s Birth in 1732.

The Bicentennial was held in 1932.

After the ‘famed’ unfinished portrait by Gilbert Charles Stuart.

This framed litho was bought and displayed in a small schoolhouse in Ellis County, Texas and when we opened up the back of the frame we discovered the lining was an original newspaper….”The Palmer Rustler’ of Palmer, Ellis County, Texas with a date of November 19, 1931. (see photos). We have placed this back behind the litho in the frame where it has always resided. This piece of newspaper is valuable in it’s own right, as it appears that the Palmer Rustler was only printed from the 1920’s to the very early 1930’s. Collectors in Ellis County would love this, especially as it is a front page!

It was law at the time that EVERY schoolhouse in America MUST have a portrait of George Washington.

It is a large and imposing work of art, HIGHLY DECORATIVE and GREAT VALUE for money!!!

George Washington (February 22, 1732[b][c] – December 14, 1799) was an American statesman and soldier who served as the first President of the United States from 1789 to 1797 and was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. He served as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, and later presided over the 1787 convention that drafted the United States Constitution. As a driving force behind the nation's establishment he came to be known as the "father of the country," both during his lifetime and to this day.

Gilbert Charles Stuart (born Stewart; December 3, 1755 – July 9, 1828) was an American painter from Rhode Island who is widely considered one of America's foremost portraitists. His best known work is the unfinished portrait of George Washington that is sometimes referred to as The Athenaeum, begun in 1796. Stuart retained the portrait and used it to paint 130 copies which he sold for $100 each. The image of George Washington featured in the painting has appeared on the United States one-dollar bill for more than a century[2] and on various U.S. postage stamps of the 19th century and early 20th century.

Detailed painting of head and shoulders of Washington. Over half of the canvas is blank.
