19C Italian Signa Terracotta Lidded Jar

PRESENTING a VERY RARE 19th Century Italian Terracotta Lidded Jar from Signa in Tuscany…..circa 1880.

The jar is in the neo-classical style with putti surrounding an armorial shield or crest on the lid and the sides of the jar adorned with neo-classical Bacchalanian figures of ladies at harvest time in various poses.

The jar is made of terracotta but there appears to be evidence of old gilding on the piece.

The interior of the jar contains a makers stamp impressed into the piece before firing and it appears to read: “ G. Bito S.S.9….Terracotta…Signa“.

The jar is a remarkable survivor as many of these would have broken over the years but this is in EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION…..no chips or cracks.
