19C Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam Domed Sandalwood and Faux Ivory Stationery Box

19C Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam Domed Sandalwood and Faux Ivory Stationery Box.

LOVELY piece of Anglo-Indian history from circa 1860.

Made in Vizagapatam, India, famous for its shell and bone craftsmanship and exquisite pieces !

This casket or domed shaped stationery box is PERFECT for the entry-level collector of Anglo-Indian or just someone who loves the simple beauty of it !

The box is made of sandalwood. Originally it would have been completed covered in, possibly tortoiseshell veneer, but definitely panels of carved bone friezes or fretwork panels (see some of our other examples in this category).

At some point in time, probably some time ago, the owner decided it had suffered from too much loss of the frieze panels and decided to remove almost all of it, thereby bringing the box back to its original sandalwood. It still retains the central bone hand-painted band on the front, the central bone medallion on the lid, depicting the Hindu Goddess Gayatri sitting on top of a Bird.

The interior is fully intact with sections for envelopes, stationery paper and a lidded box for stamps etc.

It sits on its original carved bone lions paw feet.

It is still a beautiful and highly collectible box despite its changes…..we have priced it as an entry level piece !

Anglo Indian boxes were made in India for the English residents from the early part of the 18th century. They were brought back or sent back to England usually by the people who had commissioned them. From the beginning of the nineteenth century they were imported more commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the middle decades. They were very highly valued, especially the early ones, to the extent that the designs were copied on late 19th and early 20th century tins.
